Why Atlantic Canada?
Atlantic Canada is destined to be a global offshore giant
While the current low commodity price environment has indeed made things more challenging for the industry, promising news of the long-term potential of plays off Atlantic Canada keeps coming from the operator community.
On November 12, 2015, the Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board awarded two of its deep water parcels to Statoil ASA, which has committed to spending $82 million to explore these blocks. This latest round of bids represents an investment of more than $1.2 billion on exploration of 2.5 million hectares around the Flemish Pass basin with the potential for 12 billion barrels of oil and 113 trillion cubic feet of gas. Statoil’s recent 19-month drilling program has resulted in new discoveries at the Bay de Verde and Baccalieu prospects in the Bay du Nord area.
In addition, Suncor has extended the life of the Terra Nova oil project 10 years beyond the original targets; Nexen Energy has a positive assessment of the province’s potential and long-term commitment to the area; and Nalcor Energy has completed exciting seismic work which has uncovered a new play type in the West Orphan Basin, further confirming the significant potential of another of this province’s deep water basins.
With the stability of other major production projects like Hibernia, Terra Nova, White Rose – and a fourth, Hebron, coming online in late 2017 – Newfoundland offshore activity continues to remain strong despite oil prices.
